Installation: Video Cocoon 1

I’ve had a lot of anxiety about moving to a new part of the country over the last few months. I still feel very displaced. I wanted to create a space to remove myself from my often harsh and uncomfortable surroundings. I spent some time thinking about isolation tanks, and really considering the idea of introducing video into the space, as a kind of immersive video/color therapy. The video piece is a study of light and color, with a loose visual narrative about launching into space. It is accompanied by a live prepared guitar soundtrack.

I dropped my favorite mix tape recently, and the tape still played but the footage was damaged. The color was stripped, and the footage instantly degraded to look as though it had been playing for ten years. When I viewed the nearly unrecognizable footage, I began to play with the idea of creating immersive environments based on the viewing for a single piece. This cocoon, monitor, and tape now only exist for each other, and the tape will play until either the monitor or the tape stops working. This piece is a sketch for future environments I plan to create to house my video pieces.
